What Are Spinal MIS Channel Instruments?

Spinal MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) Channel Instruments are modular tool systems specifically designed for minimally invasive spinal procedures. Core components include expandable access tubes, sequential dilators, articulating arms, light source interfaces, and disposable puncture dilators, typically crafted from medical-grade stainless steel or high-performance polymers . Their defining feature is the creation of a surgical corridor through hollow tubular structures, enabling “small-incision, visualized” operations when paired with endoscopic systems. Modern systems feature modular designs that allow flexible combination of channel sizes (5.2–22mm diameter), retractors, and accessories, with disposable options available to further reduce infection risks .

These instruments overcome limitations of traditional open surgery by gradually separating soft tissues through minimal incisions rather than extensive dissection, establishing stable operative pathways for procedures on cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine segments, including discectomy, interbody fusion, and fracture fixation .

Functions of Spinal MIS Channel Instruments

(1) Minimally Invasive Access Creation

Utilizes sequential dilators to establish surgical pathways through 3–5mm incisions, minimizing muscle and soft tissue damage compared to 10–15cm incisions in open surgery .

(2) Stable Surgical Field Exposure

Articulating arms and sector-shaped retractors maintain consistent visualization of target structures (discs, nerve roots, vertebrae) while providing ample space for instrument manipulation .

(3) Visualization Enhancement

Integrates with cold light sources and endoscopic systems (such as V-type dual-channel endoscopes) to enable real-time, full-visualization procedures, crucial for precise lesion localization and treatment .

(4) Multi-Procedure Adaptability

Supports diverse spinal interventions including MIS-TLIF, decompression, fracture fixation, and deformity correction through interchangeable components designed for different spinal segments and surgical needs .

(5) Stability Support

Assists in spinal stabilization and bony fusion by providing a controlled environment for implant placement and hardware fixation .

Why Spinal MIS Channel Instruments Are Necessary?

(1) Addressing Limitations of Open Surgery

Traditional open spinal surgery requires extensive muscle dissection, leading to spinal instability, severe postoperative pain, and prolonged recovery (7–14 hospital days). MIS channel systems reduce these issues significantly .

(2) Reducing Trauma and Complications

By minimizing muscle ischemia/necrosis and avoiding widespread tissue disruption, these instruments reduce infection risks (<1%), nerve injury rates (from 2–5% to <1%), and intraoperative blood loss (from hundreds to tens of milliliters) .

(3) Enabling Technological Innovation

They serve as the foundation for advanced techniques like UBE and Endo-TLIF. Innovations such as the V-type dual-channel endoscopy system have expanded the capabilities of minimally invasive spinal surgery to complex procedures previously requiring open approaches .

(4) Accelerating Recovery and Improving Outcomes

Patients experience less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster return to daily activities (ambulation within 1–3 days vs. longer recovery in open surgery) .

(5) Facilitating Standardization and Accessibility

Modular designs and standardized protocols lower the learning curve for minimally invasive techniques. One innovative system has been adopted by 65 hospitals and used in over 2,000 procedures, making advanced spinal care more widely available .
