What are Orthopaedic Cable Systems?

Orthopaedic cable systems are internal fixation devices. They’re used to stabilize bone fractures. They’re a good alternative when traditional plates and screws aren’t appropriate. They can adapt well to different fractures, like those with irregular bone shapes or small fragments. They cause less soft – tissue disruption during surgery, have load – sharing abilities with the bone during healing, and offer adjustability during the surgical procedure to better fix and align bone fragments.

Versatility: They can handle a broad range of fractures, like those in osteoporotic bone or ones with complex shapes. For example, in cases where bones have unusual geometries due to trauma or disease, these cable systems can still effectively stabilize the fractures.
Minimally invasive surgery: They’re applicable in minimally invasive procedures. This leads to faster recovery as there’s less tissue damage compared to traditional open surgeries. Patients can get back to normal activities sooner as a result.
Strong fixation: Even when bones are weakened or damaged, these cable systems offer robust fixation. They ensure the bone fragments stay in place during the healing process.
Components:
  • Titanium Cable: Made of a strong and biocompatible titanium, it comes in various diameters to suit different fracture needs.
  • Cable Lock Catch: This device secures the cable to the bone and has diverse designs to match different plates and bones.
  • Femoral Proximal Hook Locking Plate: Specifically for proximal femoral fractures, it provides solid fixation and enables early weight-bearing, which is crucial for patient mobility and recovery.

When Are Orthopaedic Cable Systems Needed?

Osteoporotic bones are more brittle and have reduced density. Traditional plates and screws may not provide adequate fixation as the bone may not hold the screws well. Orthopaedic cable systems, on the other hand, can wrap around the weakened bone fragments and provide stable fixation. The cables can distribute the load more evenly across the bone, reducing the risk of further damage to the fragile bone structure during the healing process

Complex Fractures: Ideal for fractures with multiple or irregular fragments where traditional methods falter. Cables adapt to bone shapes, providing multi-directional fixation.
Osteoporotic Bone: In low-density bones, they distribute stress evenly, minimizing compression and offering better stability than plates and screws.
Minimally Invasive Surgery: Well-suited for minimally invasive approaches, with smaller incisions, less tissue damage, and potentially faster recovery.
Fractures in Specific Locations: Effective for fractures in anatomically complex areas like the distal radius, distal tibia, and acetabulum, providing multi-angle fixation.
Temporary Fixation and Prophylactic Banding: Useful as temporary fixation during fracture treatment or for prophylactic measures in joint procedures.
Revision Surgery: Valuable in cases of failed fixation, providing enhanced stability and addressing bone damage.
Fractures in Children: Pediatric versions are designed for children’s smaller and more delicate bones, ensuring appropriate fixation and minimal growth interference.
