What are Pedicle Plates?
Pedicle plates, usually made of titanium or stainless steel, are key surgical implants for spinal procedures. They attach to pedicle screws inserted into the vertebrae’s pedicles. Working together, they offer rigid fixation and support, facilitating bone healing and preventing spinal instability, which is essential for a successful surgical outcome and patient recovery.
When Are Pedicle Plates Needed?
Pedicle plates, when combined with pedicle screws, have firmly established themselves as a cornerstone in orthopedic surgery for addressing numerous spinal conditions. Their capacity to deliver robust and stable fixation, along with their adaptability across diverse procedures and the availability of minimally invasive alternatives, has led to their favored status among surgeons. They offer reliable support, allowing for effective correction and stabilization of the spine, which is crucial in enhancing patient outcomes and facilitating recovery.
Spinal fusions aim to create a bony union between vertebrae. Pedicle plates act as rigid anchors for connecting rods or plates, facilitating fusion and spine stabilization. In deformity corrections like scoliosis and kyphosis surgeries, they offer strong fixation for reshaping and maintaining the correction. For trauma stabilization after fractures or dislocations, they prevent further damage. During tumor resections, they safeguard neural structures.
Specifically, in severe spinal instability from degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or fractures, pedicle plates’ strong fixation is beneficial. They’re used in complex spinal reconstructions involving multiple vertebrae or extensive instrumentation and in revision surgeries when prior ones failed, aiming for a more stable result.
