What Are Cannulated Screw Systems?
Cannulated screw systems are a form of surgical implant designed to steady and fix bone fractures. Their value shines in minimally invasive surgeries because they can be inserted via smaller incisions compared to traditional screws. These systems consist of multiple parts, such as:

Normal Cannulated Screw: The most prevalent type, characterized by a fully threaded body and a tapered head. Its design makes it versatile and widely applicable in many orthopedic scenarios for fracture fixation.
Herbert Screw: This screw features a partially threaded body and a flat head. It is particularly useful in areas where there’s limited bone, like the small bones of the hand and foot. The partial threading allows for different fixation mechanics compared to fully threaded screws, adapting well to these delicate bone structures.
Special Herbert Screw: Similar to the Herbert screw but with an added feature – a washer that’s integrated into the head of the screw. This built-in washer provides additional load distribution benefits right at the screw’s attachment point to the bone.
Headless Screw: As the name implies, it lacks a visible head. It finds its application in areas where it’s crucial for the screw to be flush with the bone, such as around joints. This design minimizes any interference with joint movement or soft tissue around the joint area.
Applications in Orthopedic Procedures
Fracture Fixation: One of the primary uses of cannulated screw systems is in stabilizing fractures. Whether it’s a simple or complex fracture, these screws can be inserted precisely to hold the broken bone segments in place, facilitating proper healing.
Osteotomies: In surgical procedures where a bone is intentionally cut (osteotomies), these systems are employed to stabilize the bone after the cut has been made. They ensure that the bone remains in the desired position during the healing phase.
Arthrodesis: When two bones need to be fused together surgically (arthrodesis), cannulated screw systems come into play. They provide the necessary stability to keep the bones in the correct alignment throughout the fusion process, helping to achieve a successful arthrodesis.

When are Cannulated Screw Systems Needed?
Cannulated screw systems are a specific kind of orthopedic implant that offers several unique characteristics. The hollow screw body is a key feature. This hollowness allows for a guidewire to be inserted through it. The guidewire serves as a precise positioning tool, ensuring that the screw is placed accurately within the bone. This is especially beneficial in complex surgical scenarios or when dealing with delicate bone structures where exact placement is crucial.

Specific Examples of Usage
- Ankle and Foot Surgery: Commonly used for fractures, dislocations, and deformities. Precise insertion helps in restoring normal function.
- Wrist and Hand Surgery: Ideal for treating wrist and hand fractures and defects. Minimizes tissue disruption and aids in mobility recovery.
- Trauma Surgery: A key option for long bone fractures of limbs. Facilitates healing and regaining limb strength.
- Spine Surgery: Used for spinal fractures, dislocations, and deformities. Ensures accurate placement and spinal stability.
